Federal Government Allocates N5.1 Billion for TETFund Research Grants

The federal government has greenlit a sum of N5,128,180,623 to finance 185 successful research proposals in the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund 2023 grant cycle. This approval, announced by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, follows the recommendations of the TETFund National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee. The committee endorsed the funding of these 185 research proposals after a meticulous screening process that commenced in March 2023, involving the assessment of 4,287 Concept Notes from applicants.

In a statement released on Wednesday by Abdulmumin Oniyangi, the acting director of public affairs at TETFund, the breakdown of the approval reveals that N3,784,635,923.00 was allocated for the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation thematic group. Humanities and Social Science received N759,875,400.00, while Cross-Cutting themes were allocated N583,669,300.63, with individual grants ranging from N8 million to over N46 million.

The statement further detailed some of the approved research works, such as the "Application of the Hydro-Biogeochemical Framework to Develop a National Rural Water Quality Assurance Plan for Sustainable Water Quality Management in Nigeria" and "Development and Use of Doubled Haploid Maize Lines for Improved Maize Yield and Tolerance to Armyworm (Spodoptera Frugiperda)" under the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation thematic group. Projects under the Cross-Cutting thematic group include "Utilization of Scrap Tires and Plastic Wastes as Aggregate Conductive Material for Renewable Energy Storage System" and "Development of Appropriate Technology for the Production of Aluminum Alloy Sacrificial Anodes for Applications in Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Industry."

The Humanities and Social Science category includes research such as "Digital Financial Inclusion, Rural Households’ Consumption Structure and Well-being in Nigeria" and "Equity and Inclusion: Creating Access to Library Resources for Students Living with Vision Impairment in e-Learning Environment in Nigerian Universities." Additionally, there are projects focused on "Mitigating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among Frontline Nigerian Army Personnel using Stress Inoculation Therapy."
